How it works
The tip is the bill times the percentage you pick; the total is the bill plus that tip. Split it and everyone owes the total divided by the number of people. The presets cover the usual range for table service in the US — 15% for adequate service, 18–20% as the common default, and 25% for something exceptional — but you can type any number.
One detail worth knowing: whether you tip on the pre-tax subtotal or the after-tax total is up to you, and it makes a small difference. On a bill with 8% sales tax, tipping 20% on the post-tax figure works out to about 21.6% of the food itself — a couple of dollars on a big check. Neither is wrong; enter whichever amount you want to tip on as the bill.
Example:an $85.50 dinner split four ways at 18% comes to $15.39 in tip and $100.89 all in — about $25.22 each. Bump the tip to 20% and the total rises to $102.60, or $25.65 a head. When you're splitting cash, it's normal to round each share up to the nearest dollar so the total covers.

Counter service, takeout, and self-serve generally carry no obligation, though a tip jar or a suggested line on the receipt is always optional. Norms vary widely by country — in much of Europe and Asia a service charge is already included and tipping is minimal — so this reflects US restaurant convention.
